The Ultimate Texas Tri-County Triangle Road Trip

Three counties in three days may sound like a lot of traveling for one weekend, but it’s worth it. This tri-county road trip is the weekend getaway of a lifetime for every Texan. You’re bound to find your new favorite store, restaurant, or attraction just by roaming around in your campervan across Big Bend Country county lines.

We’ve put together a list of some of our top spots to consider when mapping out your trifecta trip, encompassing Fort Davis, Alpine, and Marfa — but ultimately, you’re in the driver’s seat for this one. The next hidden gem is all yours to discover, and with these towns, you’ll find one as quick as you can get there from Austin.

Day 1: Alpine

Alpine’s got a little bit of everything that Big Bend Country boasts, and is a stop worth considering no matter the trip you’re planning.

Baker’s Dozen Donuts - Upon arrival, get your sweet tooth fed with a doughnut from the beloved Baker’s Dozen.

Wasserman Wranch - Feed some alpacas, get up close and personal with a kangaroo, and dote over donkeys at the cutest ranch in Alpine, but be sure to book your day in advance.

Front Street Books - Stop at this bookstore to pick up some reading material for your cozy campervan nights ahead.

Spicewood - Finish your day with some brews and a full belly at this chic restaurant just outside of Alpine’s downtown area.

Day 2: Fort Davis

Fort Davis is small but mighty. Make sure you’re well rested on this day, because we’ve got some hiking recommendations ahead!

Fort Davis Drug Store - Go back in time and visit this classic soda fountain and diner for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Fort Davis National Historic Site - Visit the former frontier military post and spend the rest of your day exploring the surrounding canyons.

BeaTea.K Gift Store - Find the perfect souvenir in this quaint shop full of handmade gifts and frequented by travelers. Make sure you check their hours before planning your trip, because they’re only open 5 days out of the week!

Poco Mexico - A hidden gem for dinner with rave reviews from customers about the authentic Mexican food and friendly service.

Day 3: Marfa

Marfa, Marfa, Marfa! Get ready to find your new obsession in this chic hot spot for artists from around the world. One thing to note, however — the legendary Prada store is just for decoration. No expensive handbags on this trip!

Prada Marfa - You’ve seen it on the ‘gram, now get your own pic in front of the designer desert store.

Moonlight Gemstones - Your one-stop rock shop! Take a gander and pick out your favorites for some custom jewelry.

Big Bend Coffee Roasters - Even the pickiest of caffeine addicts fall in love with the Big Bend Blend. You’ll need the energy boost as your trip winds down.

Para Llevar - This bodega and deli captures the hearts (and stomachs) of all who visit with its 5-star pizza.

Marfa Galleries - Nearly every block on the main drag of Marfa has gallery. Check Google Maps and pick out a few faves to stop at before you leave.
