The Weirdest Places to Visit in a Campervan

“Keep Austin Weird” has long been the city’s motto when it comes to local culture. Why not take that mantra with you across Texas on your next weekend trip, and scope out some of the weirdest places to visit in a campervan? Fall in love with the lone star state all over again and explore the whimsy and kitsch that only a Texan could truly appreciate.

No lodging accommodations necessary — experience the freedom of driving your camper to whatever city, town, or roadside attraction your heart desires. Scroll down for our full itinerary of weird locations to visit on your road trip.

Day 1: Houston

Ready to get freaky? Your first stop on this trip isn’t too far of a drive from Austin, but after a stop in Houston, you’ll feel like Austin’s a lifetime away.

Hobbit Cafe - Stop at the aptly-named Hobbit Cafe for some grub in a Tolkien-themed setting.

The Orange Show - These unique works of public art encapsulate the essence of Texas. Also, you gotta take a pic in front of the beer can house and tell your friends you’ve been cutting back on the booze.

Day 2: Dallas

Dallas lovers rejoice! The city’s got no shortage of destinations for those on the lookout for strange and fun to-do’s. During the Dallas days of your trip, you’ll be plenty busy.

JFK Assassination Museum - Well, this one’s a bit self-explanatory. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza isn’t as fun as it is eerie, but it’s still a sight to be seen and a landmark of Texas history.

Public School 214 - Take yourself back to elementary with this cafeteria-themed restaurant.

The Bowler Hat Sculpture - Once again, this one’s a bit self-explanatory. More confusing, however, is its mere existence. If you don’t visit the giant bowler hat, you missed out on the crown jewel of Dallas — many would agree!

Chocolate Secrets - A chocolatier with jazz nights and a store of “whimsical” chocolate molds? Only in Texas, baby.

Bonnie & Clyde’s Graves - The infamous couple was laid to rest in Dallas, TX, in 1934. Their graves attract those fascinated with the wayward lovers to this day.

Day 3: Take Your Pick!

For Day 3, we’ve got a lineup of strange attractions for any traveler. Take your pick of one of the locations below, and spend some of your day exploring the city before stopping at the city’s weird destination, and make sure to grab some pics for the ‘gram.

Waco, TX - The Dr. Pepper Museum

San Antonio, TX - The World’s Largest Pair of Cowboy Boots

Paris, TX - The Eiffel Tower… Texas-Style ;)
